Inmarsat A is often used in the maritime world for business and personal calling by officers and crew on vessels ranging from oil tankers to fishing trawlers. It is also a cornerstone service for safety and distress communications. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has certified Inmarsat A for possessing the functional requirements for using Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). Maritime terminals use a parabolic dish antenna, which is mounted on a stabilized pedestal, sealed in a fiberglass radome and installed on the vessel's superstructure. Multi-channel maritime units are also available.
